What concentration of muriatic acid should be use for etching old efferescent bricks in our chimney?

We want to seal the bricks on the outside of the chimney, which has developed a white powdery residue on its outside, so are planning on etching with muriatic acid, as purchased from a pool supply place, and are wondering what dilution should we use?
