I don't understand why Yojimbo won't use zanmato against Valefore?

i've tried every possible combination to defeat dark valefore, but yokimbo refuses to use zanmato. I've tried giving him all the recommended gil combos (1756, 128, 129, 538) giving him all my gil, having him on overdrive and nothing works!!!! any ideas about why or how i can fix it?
