I want to paint a mauve plaster vase burgundy, any hints?

I have a large vase I purchased a few years ago and had it painted a mauve color. I have redecorated my space and now want to paint the vase myself. Should I prime the vase and am I limited in the type of paints I can use? Thanks! :-)
