Did labour ruin Britain's last century?

Labour was formed at the height of the British Empire, and as it has empowered trade unions over the last century, would I be right in saying that they are responsible for our modern day utter lack of international competitiveness in manufacturing industries (which are clearly important as they have led Germany's recent recovery)?
